A Few Gems About Pearls

You may have noticed, that over here at SisterStory, we are a little bit fond of pearls and we are thrilled that they have rightly assumed their place as go–to pieces for all of us.

Historically, pearls were gifted to Chinese Royalty and the first records of them as ‘adornments’ date back to 2300 BC. In Roman times, pearls were considered far superior to diamonds and were the ultimate status symbol. Indeed, Julius Caesar decreed they may only be worn by the ruling classes!

Through the ages, pearls came to be associated with the middle and upper classes and, in 1980s Britain, they defined a whole cohort of young ‘Sloane Rangers’. The ‘twin set and pearl’ brigade were always considered well-dressed and refined!

Thankfully, those associations have long gone, although it is safe to say pearls have finally secured their rightful place in the jewellery box of every well-dressed female! They are now worn by any age group, in any style and their warmth, tactility and timelessness mean they transcend any fashion fad.

The fashion icon, Jackie Kennedy, famously said quite simply: “Pearls are always appropriate” whilst Coco Chanel endorsed this belief stating: “Pearls are perfect for every occasion”.

At SisterStory we couldn’t agree more. We style freshwater pearlskeshi pearls, tooth pearls, coin pearls and baroque pearls.  We wear them alone or layered, short or long, with jeans and sweats or dressed up to the nines. However you wear your pearls, don’t be afraid to mix them up. Pearls in your ears accentuate stones or precious metals at your neck; pearls on the wrist layer stunningly with simple bangles or delicate chains.

Take a look at our store now and check out this season’s tooth pearls and our stone and pearl mixes.  And, because we love pearls so much, we will be back soon with more detailed info on the types of pearl ranges we design!

For now, let’s leave the last word to Karen Karbo, author of ‘The Gospel according to Coco Chanel’:

“The truth about Chanel’s bespoke femininity is that a woman can do or say whatever she wants, as long as she’s wearing pearls!”

 That’s empowerment!
